Woodbridge High’s girls soccer team avenged an early season loss against University with a 5-1 victory Wednesday to capture the Pacific Coast League championship.
It was also the school’s ASB Game of the Week and senior night.
Pre-game festivities honored the 11 departing seniors Allie Hoertig, Lindsey Kerr, Alex Vollucci, Kinnley Davenport, Izzy Lindstrom, Sedona Harris, Madison Ortega and team captains Jayla Land, Olivia Edwards, Hannah Cooper and Rachel Shon in their final PCL game.
With the win, the Warriors ( 17-3-1, 8-1-1) advance to the CIF playoffs next week.
Head Coach Jackie Farber started all 11 seniors, honoring their years of play, contribution to the team and hard work throughout the season.
Coach Farber also had the same 11 seniors end the game with a number of normal substitutions.
The 11 seniors controlled most of the first half. With co-captain Hannah Cooper’s first goal, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the second half.
The seniors continued to carry the Warriors by scoring four more goals in the second half and only allowing only one.
Goals in the second half were made by seniors, Hannah Cooper (who had two), Lindsey Kerr, Kinnley Davenport and Olivia Edwards.
“Coaches are constantly building for the future in their programs which is very important, but one thing that’s also important to remember is the senior’s future is now,” Coach Farber said Thursday.
“Last night was our biggest game of the season and it was also all about honoring our seniors. So with 11 spots on the field, who better to than to play our 11 seniors and allow them to fully experience the victory on the field they dedicated their heart and soul to the last four years. They wanted it more than anyone and proved that with putting up five goals all from seniors.
“Last night wasn’t just a win for our record book, but also a win for the integrity of this program.”
