OK, ‘fess up please! We need to know! Which one of you was it that lit a fire under our athletes last weekend?! It has to be one of you!
Sunny Hills is supposed to be a slow course. It’s “difficult”. It’s “hilly”. Those of us who have been in Cross Country for more than one season all know the mantra. Let’s say it all together: “No one PR’s at Sunny Hills!”
Well, it seems a whole bunch of our athletes didn’t get the memo on that!
Freshman girls Ashley, Ingrid, Margaret and Marianna all ran season bests, along with Sophomores Daisy, Ada, Natalie, Mayu, and Cordelia who ran a fantastic sub-28 shaving several minutes from her Time Trial time in just a month. Junior Julianna Perez and Senior Sarah Sandoval also ran season bests. Let’s say it one more time for the benefit of Seina Shimizu: “No one Pr’s at Sunny Hills! Except Seina who ran an all-time best of 24:34.8!”
And the boys were not going to let the girls have all the fun! Tanner Castanha led the Team Woodbridge freshman boys to 3rd place with his 6th place finish at 17:16. Christian Curo, Jackson Ellis, Ethan Huang, and Blake Simon all broke sub-20 for the first time with their season PR’s in the 19s, and were joined by Ryan Albright, Hunter, Mason, Ryan DeHaas, Nikolas and Rio who all made a season PR. Nathan Hong came close to a PR himself, and a big shout out is well deserved for Garrick Lu who shaved almost 5 minutes off his Woodbridge Invitational time to finish in under 26 minutes. Nice one, Garrick!
Among the Sophomore boys, Andrew Chiou, Albert Hoang, Matthew Huang, Sho, Anish, Jonathan and Aska all PR’d, and Yoshihiro continues his tradition this season of a minute-faster-each-race coming in at just a fraction over 22 minutes! No pressure Yoshihiro, but let's see 21 at Temecula! Youssef, Joshua and Bryce all nailed season PR’s, leading the Sophomore boys to joint 1st place for their team.
Junior boys also finished 1st as a team, with Ryan and Russell heading the pack to inspire a slew of season and personal bests behind them: well done Carter Allan, Nicholas O, John Soss, Yu-Lun and Cheng who all got a season PR, Jackson Billings, Will Hardcastle, Kanishk Purohit, Josh Ramos and Jake Suh who all nailed themselves a personal best, and special mention to Matthew McEldowney and Patrick McEwen who not only got themselves a new PR but also officially now are sub-18 athletes!
Senior boys brought their team home in 2nd place, with great runs, and low-mid 16 finishes by James and John Pantigoso and Will Talbert, and a high 16 finish by Ken Kakutani. Special congratulations to Dylan Higuchi for his season PR, and to Ruosuke who broke 23 minutes for the first time.
But this story doesn’t even end on the high of the long, long list of new PRs! A particularly impressive performance by Sarah Klem and Mia Washida in the Sophomore girls race led to them placing 1st and 2nd respectively by a considerable margin, leading the team to 1st place, and Sarah wining the overall fastest female time for the meet. Well done Sarah!
Consistent, solid performances by all teams led to Woodbridge finishing overall as Meet Champions. I think we can all agree, that smile on the face of Coach Pacheco says it all! Onwards to Temecula! Let’s see what surprises they have in store for us next weekend. Go Warriors!
